Policies - Whistle Blowing

Principles

Adults working with young people are often the first to realise that someone’s behaviour is causing, or is likely to cause harm to a child or young person.

Research tells us that adults who target children for abuse will often seek out jobs and positions that bring them into close contact with children.

The Cedars School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of every child, and expects the highest possible standards of openness.

The Cedars School recognises that the decision to report a concern can be a difficult one to make, not least because of the fears of reprisals from those responsible.

The Cedars School will not tolerate harassment or victimisation and will take all possible measures to protect anyone who raises concerns in good faith.

All concerns will be treated in confidence and we will make every effort not to reveal the identity of a person reporting concerns, if they so wish. At the appropriate time, however, a person reporting concerns may be asked to come forward as a witness.

If a suspicion is reported in good faith, but is not confirmed by the investigation no action will be taken against the person reporting the suspicion.

If the suspicion concludes that allegations have been maliciously fabricated then disciplinary action may be taken against the person making the allegation.

Reporting Procedure

The earlier a concern is reported the easier it is to take action.

As a first step concerns should normally be raised with the Head Teacher or immediate Manager or alternatively the Designated Person for Child Protection.

If concerns relate to the Head Teacher, Manager or Designated Person for Child Protection then concerns should be raised with the Local Authority Designated Officer – 01635 519785.

Concerns may be discussed between colleagues first, as it may be easier to raise the matter if there are two or more people who share the same concerns.

If an approach cannot be made to any of the above people then the Local Authority Safeguarding Manager can offer advice – 01635 503159.

Concerns are better raised in writing. If this is not possible then a telephone call can be made to the appropriate person, or a meeting arranged.

The report, written or verbal, should set out the background and history of the concern, giving names, dates and places where possible and the reason behind the concerns about the situation.
